One of my favorite things to do is look out and see beautiful valley’s from the tops of mountain peaks. Ben Lomond Peak provides one of those amazing views. A must see in my opinion. Mountains and dirt bikes, you can’t get any better than that!
There are a couple of ways to get to the very top of Ben Lomond Peak, hiking on foot or riding single track on a dirt bike! I chose dirt bike because it is man’s best friend. There are a couple other trails as well that are for hiking only but still merge into the main trail. Check out this amazing view from the top!
This trail is NOT for beginners! The trail can become very narrow, rocky, and steep. You can reach the peak two different ways. Each direction provides amazing scenery and can be pretty challenging. I personally think it is more scenic going from the south but both ways are amazing and definitely worth experiencing!
REACHING THE PEAK FROM THE SOUTH
Trail head: Ben Lomond Peak, Map
Nearest Town: North Ogden, Utah
Trail Type: High mountain single track, Rocky, Tight Switchbacks, Steep
Elevation: Approx. 10,000 feet at the top
Best Season: Summer, Early Fall
Difficulty: Difficult, NOT for beginners
Estimated Time Spent in Area: 3-4 hours
The North Ogden divide is a passage way running through the mountain from Ogden to Eden Valley on the East. At the summit there is a small parking lot which serves as the trail head to Ben Lomond Peak on the north and more trails to the south. These trails are frequented by hikers, mountain bikers, and horses. Please be considerate and use trail etiquette.
This trail starts right off the main road and continues through thick trees and climbs pretty fast. Once up the first ridge, the trail continues along the top of the ridge to the north and to the main peak. There are many tight switchbacks which can be tricky to navigate. The terrain gets steep and rocky quick. Keep your eyes on the trail and your momentum going and you’ll be to the top in no time!

REACHING THE PEAK FROM THE NORTH
Trail head: Mantua, Map
Nearest Town: Mantua, Utah
Trail Type: High mountain single track, Dirt roads, Rocky, Tight switchbacks, Steep
Elevation: Approx. 10,000 ft at the top
Best Season: Summer, Early Fall
Difficulty: Difficult, NOT for beginners
Estimated Time Spent in Area: 3-4 hours
Heading south on Mantua’s main street and toward the canyon on Willard Peak road, there is a dirt parking area on the east where most people unload their machines. You can continue on the paved road until it turns to dirt and try to find a parking spot, but if it’s during the busy season, that may be a little difficult.
This road gets very busy. Be very aware of others coming the opposite direction. There are many blind corners and it would not be fun to meet someone head on. The road continues for several miles as it winds up the mountain side to what is called Inspiration Point. The views are amazing from here, but if you want to leave the beaten path a little bit, continue reading.
Single Track Trailhead
Just before heading up the last little climb on the road to Inspiration Point, there is a small spring and then a turnout with a trail heading to the south. This leads to a small pond called Willard Basin. This is an awesome view as well because there is usually a little snow on the south peak which makes for a great photo opportunity. If you look close enough, you’ll see the trail traversing the southern peak. This trail continues up and over several other peaks and on to Ben Lomond Peak.
This trail is steep, rocky, and very technical. There can be many hikers on this trail during the busy times. Be considerate and stay focused. One failed move here and it’s a long way down. There is only one way to the peak so you can’t really get lost.
This video will explain the terrain much better. Enjoy!

LOCATION DESCRIPTION
This place is beautiful! But don’t let the beauty distract you from the dangers. These trails are steep and rocky. Take your time, allow plenty of time, and know your limits. Do not attempt this trail in bad weather. The weather can turn cooler quickly since you are at higher elevations. We rode this trail in August and there we still had to plow through a small snow bank. Plan to spend a little time looking around. The trail can be so narrow you don’t dare look off but it’s worth it to stop for a minute. You may even see some mountain goats.
As always, if you pack it in, pack it out. Keep the trails and landscape clean and be courteous to others. And of course, take lots of pictures to remember for many years to come!
